In their various forms, LED displays have recently become the most popular consumer electronics display technology. POLED, LED, OLED, AMOLED, and other similar abbreviations have entered our everyday life.
Everything from smartphones to smartwatches, televisions to computer monitors use some variation of this underlying display technology to provide consumers with high-quality yet cost-effective solutions.
With technology advancing rapidly, industry experts and tech enthusiasts predict that another new LED technology will rapidly ascend the popularity charts in the future.
What is an AMOLED display?
If you buy a high-end smartphone with an OLED display, chances are you’re getting an AMOLED display. AMOLED stands for “Active Matrix OLED,” Modern OLED displays in consumer electronics use an active matrix rather than passive matrices found in older OLED displays.
AMOLED displays use active matrix or thin-film transistor arrays that are more power efficient than most old OLED displays. Samsung dominates the AMOLED display market and has designated the best of the best as the Super AMOLED display.
AMOLED displays typically combine the advantages of P-OLED displays and standard OLED displays. However, they are more expensive because they are more durable and versatile.
What is POLED, and how does it function?
POLED, or Plastic Light Emitting Diode is a display technology that deposits an electroluminescent organic semiconductor on a flexible plastic substrate such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) rather than glass.
Because the display panel is made of more malleable plastic than glass, it can be bent, folded, or rolled up without breaking. One thing to keep in mind is that POLED is not PMOLED. While the former is the emerging new technology that will be discussed in other articles.
POLED vs OLED
An OLED panel’s light-emitting diodes are sandwiched between two sets of substrates, with a polarizer on top. POLED is nearly identical to OLED, except that it is made of polyethylene (plastic) rather than glass, allowing manufacturers to create flexible displays that can be rolled up like paper.
In addition, because of the use of plastic, these panels are thinner and less expensive to manufacture than standard OLED displays, which are essential factors to consider when most OEMs attempt to cut costs to increase their margins.
In this Poled vs Oled or Poled vs Amoled debate no one is a clear one, while POLED is used on budget smartphones, the Amoled or Oled displays are used in premium or flagship smartphones. But in terms of picture quality and color reproduction if there is match between Poled vs Oled, Oled is a clear winner.
Poled vs Amoled or oled which one is better?
The most obvious benefit of using plastic rather than glass is its durability. Because plastic is more flexible and less prone to shattering than glass, POLED panels will be significantly more shockproof than standard OLED panels and thus expected to be more durable.
All smartphone displays, regardless of whether they have a plastic substrate underneath, have a layer of glass on top. While such panels are almost certainly more durable than all-glass alternatives, they are not entirely shatterproof, as some online commentators believe.
These panels are also less expensive and thinner than glass-based OLEDs, allowing manufacturers to create more compact smartphones and tablets.
Despite the many benefits of these panels, plastic has a few drawbacks. The first and most crucial factor to consider is the display quality. Glass has far superior optical properties to plastic and is generally more precise than its less brittle counterpart because plastic is more prone to scratching than glass, so the manufacturers are using a glass layer on top of the POLED panels.
Using AMOLED in foldable phone is tricky while POLED on the other hand is easy to use as P in P OLED stands for plastic and are easily foldable. P OLED is susceptible to scratches. Hence this debate of POLED vs AMOLED or POLED vs OLED is not an easy one. POLED is cheap, while the others are expensive and are used in premium range of smartphones and tablets.
